Combating the spread of misinformation surrounding COVID-19 in Northern Nigeria

Addressing the prevalence of fake news
and myths about COVID-19

The Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI) implemented the “Know
Covid-19″ project to combat the spread of misinformation surrounding COVID-19 in
Northern Nigeria. This project, funded by the Public Affairs Section of the US
Embassy, Abuja, ran from May 19th, 2020, to February 18th, 2021.

Project Activities and Achievements

Research and Monitoring

We established a robust system for identifying and tracking the most prevalent COVID-19 myths and fake news narratives. This involved actively researching online and offline information channels across Northern Nigeria. The collected data provided valuable insights into the specific misinformation challenges faced by the region.

Communication and Outreach

BBYDI leveraged the power of radio, a widely accessible medium in Northern Nigeria, to deliver their educational content. They developed culturally relevant radio programs broadcasted in Hausa, Yoruba, and Pidgin languages. These programs achieved significant reach, informing communities about COVID-19, debunking myths, and promoting crucial safety measures. The project's success was further amplified by their SMS campaign. By utilising a database exceeding 17,000 individuals, BBYDI effectively disseminated fact-checked information directly to a large audience.
